Emma Gonzalez was just a high school kid like a lot of other high school kids but not any more. This fiery young woman gave an emotion filled speech that has gone viral, and she intends to change the gun control conversation in America.
I am sure that that the various pro-gun lobbies have an army of experts picking over her speech looking for technical inaccuracies, questionable data, and the imprecise use of words. They will make great hay about how she has her facts wrong, and the usual pious dog faces will get on television and remind us how they are sending their "thoughts and prayers" and "now is not the time to discuss gun control." Emma and her fellow students call that bullshit.
Here are a few incontrovertible facts:
This young woman and her peers are pissed off.
She and her peers do not believe that mass shootings have no solutions.
She and many of her peers are old enough to vote.
Young people are quite adept at using social media.
Beware hand wringing, platitude offering, do nothing, bags of hot air, these kids have your number and they are coming after you.
Ms Gonzalez, you have made more sense to me than any of the bullshit that has come out Washington in a very long time. You called it right...BULLSHIT. You have restored my faith in humanity.
Is it not ironic that high school students have more common sense than our elected leaders? Is it not sad that they can't be just high school kids, with no worries?

Sadly, far too many of our elected officials spend their time and effort raising money for the next campaign rather than doing the work they were elected to do. I hope these young people will use their energy to kick some butt and put our government back on track.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, these young people have given me more hope for the future, than any of the political gyrations that have come out of Washington for years.
DeleteThanks for stopping by and commenting Olga.
I agree with Olga, definitely a new way of electing officials needs to be invented. I say we make them all tryout, like they did on American Idol and then we all vote by phone for them.
ReplyDeleteI know, I know, we can't do that, but seriously something has to change. I think it will, but it's not going to be easy, it's not going to be fast, but it will happen.
I don't know if you've ever seen the movie Demolition Man, Sandra Bullock is in it and I adore her. That's how I see the future...just happy that Taco Bell wins the restaurant wars. Nice to read you :)
Alicia, great to hear from you. Indeed something has to change, and I think it is get all the money out of campaign politics and have a time limits of how long the campaigns last. Two months for a presidential, and one month for the house and senate. All primaries one month. Everything paid out of tax dollars not a cent from anything but the government with extreme oversight. I would also make voting mandatory, you don't have to vote but you have to show up at the polls and election day would be a national holiday, everyone has off.
DeleteUncle Sam had no problem telling me to put on this uniform back in 1970, I don't have a problem with telling people to get their asses down to a polling place (lots of them no lines) once a year, and cast a vote. Australia has such a law and it works fine from what I have read.
I live in the TV viewing area for the Pennsylvania 18th congressional district special vote that is taking place in few days. Most of the area can't vote in this election, yet every commercial break we get pounded by ads from these two candidates. One will quit and the other guy's comes on. This has been going on for several months. One frigging congressional district and millions of dollars are being spent on ads that just repeat over and over and most of the viewers can't vote in the election. WTF?
If someone doesn't know by now who the hell they are going to vote for then they probably have no business voting.
C'mon Emma Gonzalez, you and your peers are going to have to save America from the adults.
Alicia, always an honor, thanks for stopping by and commenting.
